Study skill
labels — week 3
In the first video "The 3 best science-based
study tips" Mike, shared with us about the most effective study tips. This
is all very useful and accurate information because the tips he gives are based
on proven science through research. According to this video, the 3 main
practice methods are Quizzing, Spacing, Mixing, and for each person's
preference, there will be ways that work best for everyone. Quizzing is a form
of active recall, or it is a form of testing yourself. An example based on
research shows that groups of people who do more tests than reading theory
consistently score high. As for groups that take fewer tests or students who
study only theory. It will take more time, but the results are not very good.
And one way that often applies to yourself is to use flashcards to quiz
yourself. Spacing is also known as Spaced repetition. With this method, we
should spread out your study over time, space out your study time, and review
again before you forget it to improve your study curve. And finally, Mixing
(Interleaving) understand the connection of different ideas, switch different
subjects. There is a reasonable study schedule such as in 1 hour of study, it
should be 50mins on, and 10mins off.
The second video: "5 Active Reading Strategies
for Textbook Assignments" by Thomas Frank shared with viewers ways to get
information from books. And how to read effectively and can store the amount of
information in that book. We can active reading in 5 steps:
1) Immediately turn to the back of the book and examine
the keywords, summary, conclusion, and questions.
2) The longer the text, the less likely they are to be
significant. So go through the paragraphs and figure out which ones are the
most important.
3) Make a list of questions before starting a new chapter/section,
and then answer them as you read.
4) Keep an eye out for unusual formats or anything
that stands out. They are very likely to be significant.
5) Take notes and make notes while reading (you can
use post-it notes, pencil to scribble on the book, or just take notes in a
separate notebook, application after each chapter)
The third video "Creating critical thinkers
through media literacy: Andrea Quijada at TEDxABQED" of the TEDx Talks
channel has brought us to a very important issue that is critical thinking
through media. The examples that have been given highlight the barriers and
challenges that people encounter and learn with media.
