media representation
week 10, video task
Hello everyone welcome to my blog this week
This week we're going to dive into a rather interesting industry phrase" Media Representation". First, we should find out what it means. According to BBC UK, Media Representation is the way the media presents itself. specific gender/age/nationality/region/social issue. Media can shape an audience's knowledge and understanding) about these topics and audiences.A good Media Representation case is Kodi Lee, an Asian-American, autistic and blind who won season 14 of America's Got Talent (2019). Kodi's victory is an inspiration that has a powerful impact on audiences. People in his community (disabled people, people with autism, Asian-Americans, ...) feel empathy and representation, while the mass audience knows and is benevolent more empathetic towards people like Lee. Yet, the Media Representation story is more than that.Besides cases like Kodi Lee being a good representation, there are also bad representations. And these bad representations, when constantly appearing in the media, can cause the audience to have a wrong view, even become extreme.Like the Arabs in international cinema, they are often oil-rich, hungry for leadership, and, potentially, terrorists. Typically, the series The Mummies, Taken, or blockbuster G.I Joe.The constant repetition of this bad Media Representation is so many and well known that it distorts social perception. Just wear Middle Eastern clothes, carry a bag, and pretend to throw it at someone, people will immediately think you are a terrorist who just dropped a suicide bomb and will run away for your life.Or as in the documentary Miss Representation Female Leadership, deals with a fact that few people pay attention to the mass media is distorting the image and devaluing women. The film sends a powerful message. Today's media is too focused on huge profits, dominated by large corporations, so it has sent the wrong messages to young people. The woman becomes the subject of violence and judgment, as well as her victim. As long as women consider physical beauty as the most important thing, they will limit their opportunities to become leaders and influencers. The film Miss Representation offers startling numbers of Hollywood movies where the stereotype of a beautiful, sexy woman as a male backdrop is reproduced over and over again without change. With the cartoon genre for nearly 60 years, there are only 13 female protagonists. Because most of the directors here are men, some female directors have no voice or are not accepted. Thus, movies implicitly declare that a woman's value is measured only by her physical beauty, attractiveness, and sexual ability. When these things are gone, the woman is considered to have lost all value. Meanwhile, men, after seeing a lot of images of supermodels dressed in cool on film, will judge women in real life much more harshly. Men enjoy every privilege in judging and judging women. The meaning that the documentary representing Miss mentioned is that it is not necessary to attach too much importance to the value of appearance according to the standards of society or others. Which directs viewers to true values, being yourself the way you want.So for those who want to work on tradition, we need to know that the purpose of media representation should be to equalize and normalize the diversity of community groups.Media Representation does its job well when individuals from different communities UNDERSTAND each other. To respect each other, live peacefully, and help each other to progress.
